Due to the low boron and low phosphorus raw quartz the majority of our final product will be sold to the solar panel market. Over the past two decades, the use of solar energy has grown exponentially. Today, silicon-based photovoltaic technologies account for about 90 percent of the global solar energy market. Our Silicon Metal is further refined in polycrystalline silicon or polysilicon. Polysilicon is the base material for solar cells and semi-conductor grade silicon. The majority of the silicon metal produced by PacWest Silicon will be converted to a high-purity form of silicon by polysilicon producers, such as REC Silicon in Moses Lake. Monocrystal silicon is also a critical semiconductor material found in modern electronics. As a substrate material used in the production of field effect transistors (FETs), LEDs and integrated circuits, silicon can be found in virtually all computers, mobile phones, tablets, televisions, radios and other modern communication devices.
As well, PacWest's silicon will be used as the base material for silicon chemicals. Silicon products include caulking compounds and sealants, lubricants, rubber gaskets and seals, food additives, adhesives, coatings, ceramics, mortars, glass, polymers, polishes and cosmetics. The use of silicone products is diversified across a broad range of industries and consumer products, products you use every single day.
Another use of silicon metal is as an alloy material in various grades of aluminum. Primarily aluminum used for performance applications from beer cans, automotive components and aerospace products. Silicon demand in the aluminum sector has grown significantly as a result of the increasing use of aluminum-based parts as replacements for heavier steel or iron parts in automotive applications such as the Ford F-150. Reducing the weight of the truck by over 800 lbs and therefore increasing the MPG and another great way that our products help decrease global carbon emissions.
